So you are planning to create a logo. However, with a billion other logos out there, how can you make sure that your logo is an original? Follow these basic guidelines in creating unique and original logos.
1. Use Google’s Image Search
The very first thing you should do is to use Google’s image search. And no — the purpose is not to copy an existing image — but rather to know which images you should avoid! For example, let’s say that you are in the coconut oil business and you are planning to feature a coconut tree in your logo. A quick Google image search would show you the coconut tree logos that are already being used by other companies. The point here is to take note of the logo designs that have already been done. This would save you from copyright problems and issues in the long run.
2. Do NOT Use Google’s Image Search
The next thing for you to do is to not use Google’s Search… Huh? Before you get all confused, this step is about reducing the likelihood of “copying” a logo. The fact is, subconsciously, while you are looking at existing logos, you also run the risk of using the same styles in making your own. So what can you do? While you are taking note of logos that are already out there, make sure that you are not entertaining them as ideas for creating your own logo.
3. Doodle and Sketch Your Logo
This is one of the best ways to make sure that your logo is original. Get a pencil and some paper, and start doodling and sketching your ideas. It may sound rather old-fashioned in today’s fast-paced world, but there is nothing quite the same as having a pencil in hand and letting your ideas flow. You could also use design software like Illustrator, but remember that it contains only a limited number of shapes and styles. The better option is to start with a handmade sketch, before “transferring” and refining it into your computer.
4. Create Your Own Font and Style
If you are planning to include some text in your logo, there is a huge variety of commercial fonts for you to choose from. However, wouldn’t you want to make sure that your font style is unique, too? Creating your own font and style is certainly an original method. Another option is to take a commercial font and “tweak” it in your own unique way. Add your own “shape” to the letters. Condense, widen, or do something else entirely with the spaces between the letters. The bottom line is to make the font and style completely unique.
Keeping your logo unique among a billion other logos is definitely a challenge. Nonetheless, by taking note of the guidelines discussed in this article, you can make sure that your logo is — indeed — original.
